New York Bike Portrait: Kim in Central Park

New York Bike Portrait Kim Burgas in Central Park

Kim Burgas in Central Park. Artist, designer, dancer, cyclist… Kim does it all, and does it well. Ever the woman about town, Kim organizes the regular “Get Fancy!” rides that were recently mentioned on this blog.

If I could get all Sartorialist-y for a second: I’m a fan of Kim’s bike style. “Cycle chic”, whatever that is, is usually used to describe the adoption of bike style borrowed directly from Amsterdam or Copenhagen. And not that there’s anything wrong with that! But to me, Kim’s working a “cycle chic” that’s her own, and uniquely American (and it should be – like many of my #BikeNYC subjects, Kim originally hails from the heartland). I like seeing the dressed-up elements combining with the beat-up Schwinn frame and New York chain lock. Oh, and brace yourselves: Kim also wears a helmet.

Funny aside: After we finished shooting this, we were walking through the park, and a hot dog vendor commended Kim for riding in heels. He then asked her, in a conspiratorial/empathetic, it’s ok, you can tell me kind of way: “Do you have a hard time with it?”

Not to worry, she does just fine.
