New York Bike Portrait: Amanda with Raleigh and Flowers

I was riding on Vanderbilt from Prospect Park to Greenpoint, when I spotted this ahead of me:

A sign of Spring! I didn’t want to pass this up, so when I finally caught up with her at a red light a few blocks later, I introduced myself and asked for a photo. We were going the same way, so we rode and chatted for a bit, until we got to the spot where I wanted to shoot – the sidewalk along the newly protected Flushing Ave bike lane.

Amanda studies theater at NYU and works a bakery stand at the Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket. Her friend sells flowers there, so she was taking some home. She picked up this Raleigh road bike about a year ago; it’s her first New York bike. For her it beats the L train any day, except when it rains. I suggested fenders – riding in the rain is not as hardcore as it seems. And still miles better than the L.

  • Julie - I love this girl! I can’t imagine a life in New York City w/out fenders. Even when it hasn’t rained for days the puddles are truly filthy nightmares!
