For the last couple of weeks I’ve been traveling and staying off Twitter. So it was only today that I heard that Krys Blakemore, artist, bike mechanic, and one of my favorite bike portrait subjects, was hit by a car while riding her bike on Atlantic Ave on March 15. She suffered multiple injuries, including a leg broken in 2 places, requiring major surgery. She’s on her way to recovery but for the moment she’s unable to walk, work, or ride her bike. Joe Nocella, owner of 718 Cyclery where Krys works, has set up a fund where we can all contribute to her recovery.
This is a stark reminder of how vulnerable we all are riding on these city streets. I often feel that #BikeNYC is a big family — we’re all in this together. Let’s help out one of our own.
