I’ve been sitting on this one for awhile – didn’t want to say anything until I saw it in print. But here it is.
If you’re riding in the Five Boro Bike Tour and have received your tour packet, check out pages 8-9 of the Program and Ride Guide.
For those who don’t know, the 5 Boro Bike Tour is a huge bike event in NYC that takes place each may. Forty-two miles of roadway are closed to car traffic so that more than 30,000 cyclists can ride along a course that passes through all five boroughs. It’s gotten pretty popular. This year they sold out in one day.
Bike New York, the organization that puts on the Tour every year, asked me late last year to work with them on a new feature for their magazine-style Program. The piece, “In My Neighborhood”, would feature 5 #BikeNYC portraits, one of a rider in each of the 5 boroughs of New York. Each photo would be accompanied by a quote from the cyclist about what it’s like to ride in their borough. At the time, I had enough Brooklyn and Manhattan subjects for them to choose from, but I had to find, photograph, and interview riders in Staten Island, Queens, and the Bronx in December. The programs are now being sent out, and I managed to snag one at Eastern Mountain Sports. Bike New York were terrific to work with, and did a great job with the spread. I couldn’t be happier with how this came out:
Return visitors to this blog might recognize some of the people in these photos:
Manhattan – Alex
Brooklyn – Sheryl (Representing not just Brooklyn, but my beloved Greenpoint!)
Staten Island – John and Martha
Bronx – Hugo
Queens – Megan
I know that all of the above are stoked to be representing their respective corner of the city. High fives all around.
Sheryl - Oh, meant to tell you – I love your shot in front of the Fordham Ave gates of the Bronx Zoo! Is this the day you mentioned you were going to be riding on Southern Blvd and I told you to be careful?
Dmitry - Thank you! Yes, that was the day. I was careful :). I got my photo of Willie that same day (http://gudphoto.com/bikenyc/2010/12/21/bikenyc-portrait-willie/).
