“At this point, I cannot imagine a life without my bike.”

This is Sheryl (a.k.a. Ms. Bitch Cakes), and her Hello Kitty beach cruiser. Sheryl writes a popular blog where she documents “a Neurotic Glamour Girl’s Weight Watchers Experience and Fitness Adventures.” She’s made an amazing transformation in her life and her bike has become a big part of the journey. Last summer, she completed her first ever 5-Boro Bike Tour on this bike – in heels, naturally.

A couple of weeks ago, I posted a comment on one of her Flickr photos telling her she’d be a good fit for my BikeNYC series. I didn’t hear back. About a week later, though, I got an email from Sheryl saying that someone forwarded her my site and she thought she’d be a good fit for my BikeNYC series. She never saw my Flickr comment, it turns out. But it was surely meant to be. We’re both Greenpointers (practically neighbors), so Sheryl suggested we shoot on West St. around the Terminal Warehouse building – a perfect choice.

“Perhaps one day I will get a ‘real’ bike, but I will always love my Hello Kitty Beach Cruiser. That bike and I have been through so much together – It’s not just a physical object anymore, but a symbol of how far I have come and what is possible.”
