Rally at City Hall

There was a rally in front of City Hall today demanding that the city expand its protected east side bike lanes from 34th street, where they end, up to 125th street. I went over to our non-bicycle accessible City Hall to take a look and some photos.
The rally featured several speakers (advocates, local politicians), and a big stack of 2,500 hand-written letters to Bloomberg urging the city to finish the job.
I do hope that those lanes get extended. While I don’t think they’re the solution to all the issues faced by cyclists (the 1st Ave “protected” lane can feel like a death tunnel between 1st and 14th), having a bike lane that just ends randomly is pretty unserious. The number of cyclists in the city will continue to grow (I hope!), so this infrastructure needs to be there.

More after the jump.
