Yesterday New York City elected its new mayor, Bill de Blasio, in a landslide. In many ways de Blasio ran as the anti-Bloomberg, however he and Mike seem to see eye to eye on at least one issue: promoting cycling and safer streets. In fact, de Blasio recently outlined a “Vision Zero” plan to eliminate traffic fatalities in the city. So, at least he talks the talk. And a few days ago, he met with safe streets activists to listen to their concerns and accept hundreds of petitions asking him to sustain and grow the livable streets advances made in the last few years under Bloomberg and Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan. I was covering the event for Transportation Alternatives so I was on hand to snap this portrait of the mayor-to-be with bike activist Laura Solis.
Will the new mayor be able to make good on his pledges to the livable streets community? We’ll be watching.
