I’ve said it before – you never know who you might meet on a bicycle in New York City. Last Thursday it happened to be celebrated fashion designer and everyday bike commuter Lela Rose. We chatted in the bike lane on Broadway and she agreed to a quick portrait in Union Square.
Originally from Texas, Lela started riding a bike in New York about 11 years ago. She says she quickly found it was the key to living in New York – the least stressful, fastest, and most convenient way to get around town. Now her entire family (including kids and two Yorkshire Terriers) get around by bicycle. Speaking of Stitch and Bobbin, they ride to and from work with Lela every day.
Lela’s bike is a Breukelen by Bowery Lane Bicycles, with some custom embellishments. Lela let me in on the design process behind her bike modification:”I yarn-bombed the hell out of it.”
