Saw this green machine glide past me on 1st and 12th. Caught up with him at 14th Street, took the portrait between 14th and 15th. Turns out that the pilot of this contraption is Dr. Jeff Weiss, chair of Urology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. An avid cyclist with 5-6 different bikes knocking about at any given time, he just finished modifying this Electra Rat Fink cruiser (changing the coaster brake to a hand brake). He digs the relaxed feel and comfortable posture. “I won’t win any races on it, but then I’m not in a big rush right now.”
Dr. Jeff and I ended up riding together for about 40 blocks, chatting about all manner of things bike related. He was returning to his apartment on the Upper East Side after completing one of his favorite city rides – Queens via the 59th St Bridge, Brooklyn via the Pulaski Bridge, back to Manhattan on the Williamsburg Bridge, and finally back home up 1st Ave.
Never know who you’ll meet out in #BikeNYC land — or what they’ll be riding.
Steffe - Dr. Cool.
