For a more civilized commute

I finally got tired of getting splashed and put some fenders on my bike this weekend. Having done that, I figured I might as well install a rear rack too.  Strapping my messenger bag to the back makes a big difference in my commute – my  neck and shoulders are thanking me already. I usually carry my dSLR + Lens + Flash + miscellaneous other items, so it gets heavy fast.

Even so,  I don’t think I’ll be repeating this feat I pulled in Amsterdam anytime soon:

We found this TV stand on Craigslist; it was surprisingly heavy for its size. I rode it all the way across town to our apartment, steadying it with one hand, just like in the photo. It might have been American overcompensation, but I felt very legit, going over the cobblestone bridges with a piece of furniture on my bike.

Check out my Flickr set of other bikes/bikers in Amsterdam.
