Today’s photo: We’ve got all night

I’ve loved the accordion for a long time, but I first picked one up last year while living in Amsterdam. America has had a fraught relationship with the squeezebox, from the Polka craze of the 1950s, to its complete cultural rejection epitomized by Gary Larson in the 1980s, to its current hipster cachet thanks to the popularity of bands like Beirut and Gogol Bordello.

Me, I don’t want any of that cultural baggage. I keep it simple:  grab a handle of Stoli, sneak up to the roof under cover of darkness, and serenade the city of New York until the bottle is finished or I pass out, whichever’s first.

In the Future, there will be Hookahs

I bought this shisha/hookah/nargileh/water pipe/hubblebubble/whatever at the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul. I liked its modern, unadorned look – totally unlike 99% of the shishas sold there. I enjoyed bargaining with the shop owner, in English, for about 20 minutes. It was only after we completed the deal that I realized the guy was from Armenia and we could have done the whole thing in Russian.

It’s a quality piece – all stainless steel and brass, and heavy as hell. Disassembled, I can only imagine how it would look on the airport X-Ray screen.

So I went with a futuristic look for this one.
