The Egyptian soccer team is just defeated arch-rivals Algeria in the semi-finals of the African Nations cup. They will now face Ghana in the finals.
Egypt has won the last 2 Cups, in 2006 and 2008. Four years ago, I was living in Cairo when Egypt defeated the Ivory Coast on penalties.
The victory unleashed complete pandemonium in Cairo that lasted all night long. Everyone in the city poured into the streets. The intensity was incredible, and, given the amount of emotion and the revelers’ love of makeshift aerosol flamethrowers, it was both amazing and a relief that virtually none of this was augmented by alcohol.
On the night of February 10, 2006, we walked from Windsor hotel where we watched the final through downtown and over the 6 October bridge back to our apartment in Agouza. Here is a taste of what to expect tonight, and especially if Egypt are again victorious on January 31.
