Steve’s been following this site for awhile and finally decided he wanted a bike portrait of his own. So he emailed me. Yes, it’s that easy. I met him on his morning work commute from Clinton Hill to the Flatiron District. He works at Blue State Digital<\/a>, a media strategy firm that works with various nonprofits and was integrally involved with a\u00a0successful\u00a0little operation known as the 2008 Obama election campaign.<\/p>\n

Pell Street in Chinatown, where we took this photo, has a significance to Steve’s bike story. Steve lived on this street four years ago, and finally became fed up with the congestion and crowding on sidewalks and in the subways. He’d been riding his bike to visit friends in Brooklyn every now and again, and eventually discovered the ease and freedom of riding to work. In the last few years he’s moved several times and with each new apartment came a new commute route. As he wrote me in his email, the bike “has\u00a0given me the opportunity to explore the city as a part of my daily commute. I’ve discovered so many gems in unlikely places as a result of just passing through on the way to one bridge or another — something I totally would have missed out on if I were packed onto a subway car. ”<\/p>\n

Though Steve no longer lives on Pell Street, he still frequents his old barber shop here. Can’t beat a $7 haircut in NYC.<\/p>\n
