Lloyd is a social worker living and working in the East Village. He\u2019s on vacation this week, and was taking advantage of the warm weather to ride from lower Manhattan up to the George Washington Bridge. I caught up with him on the East River bikeway underneath the FDR Drive.\u00a0He\u2019s gotten around New York on a bike for 30 years and has enjoyed good bike luck \u2013 despite always keeping his bikes outside he\u2019s never had one stolen. \u201cAnd I\u2019ve never been in an accident \u2013 knock on wood. Lots of close calls, though.\u201d Regarding\u00a0the city\u2019s current cycling boom, he\u00a0has somewhat mixed feelings. \u201cIt\u2019s gotten quite crowded out there. But I do like the new bike paths.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lloyd is actually not a bike commuter \u2013 he walks to work. But he\u2019s still on the bike every single day. \u201cI ride all year round. Maybe 360 days out of the year, rain or shine. I\u2019ll ride if it\u2019s 10 degrees out, as long as there\u2019s no snow on the ground.\u201d Why so much biking? Turns out that it\u2019s more than mere recreation. \u201cIt\u2019s my psychotherapy. Maybe it\u2019s the exercise, or the rhythm of the legs, but it relaxes me, and helps clear my head.\u201d He wishes me luck and rides off, pressing his small Grundig radio to his ear as he pedals.<\/p>\n
