{"id":1176,"date":"2011-04-18T20:23:54","date_gmt":"2011-04-19T00:23:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gudphoto.com\/bikenyc\/?p=1176"},"modified":"2011-08-24T14:12:35","modified_gmt":"2011-08-24T18:12:35","slug":"new-york-post-bike-lanes-steve-cuozzo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gudphoto.com\/bikenyc\/2011\/04\/18\/new-york-post-bike-lanes-steve-cuozzo\/","title":{"rendered":"The New York Post, Bike Lanes, and Photojournalism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today I read a characteristically honest and level-headed piece of analysis by Steve Cuozzo (of <a href=\"http:\/\/stevecuozzo.com\" target=\"_blank\">stevecuozzo.com<\/a>) in the New York Post titled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nypost.com\/p\/news\/opinion\/opedcolumnists\/bike_lanes_bike_lies_rQ7zLOlsSFAOYsTePaTu3I\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Bike Lanes, Bike Lies: The &#8216;Bicycle Boom&#8217; is Blatantly Bogus&#8221;<\/a>. Cuozzo makes a lot of good points about how &#8220;food delivery personnel&#8221; aren&#8217;t really people and don&#8217;t deserve bike lanes, and how the &#8220;once majestic&#8221; Prospect Park West has been ruined by a simultaneously extremely dangerous and\u00a0completely empty bike lane.<\/p>\n<p>But me, I&#8217;m a pictures guy, so what really caught my eye was the photograph used to illustrate the story. It&#8217;s a photo of the Prospect Park West bike lane, with the caption &#8220;Totally empty &#8212; as usual&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gudphoto.com\/bikenyc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/bikelies.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1177\" title=\"New York Post Steve Cuozzo\" src=\"http:\/\/gudphoto.com\/bikenyc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/bikelies.png\" alt=\"Steve Cuozzo is an excellent journalist\" width=\"450\" height=\"588\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gudphoto.com\/bikenyc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/bikelies.png 563w, https:\/\/gudphoto.com\/bikenyc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/bikelies-229x300.png 229w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Holy shit<\/em>! I thought to myself. <em>It IS totally empty<\/em>! Now, I&#8217;ve <a href=\"http:\/\/gudphoto.com\/bikenyc\/2011\/04\/03\/prospect-park-west-bike-lane-130-2pm\/\">taken some photos of my own of this particular bike lane<\/a>, and it was busy with cyclists of all ages and abilities. But then, that was <em>weeks<\/em> ago.<\/p>\n<p>The Post is doing a valuable service by bringing this waste of resources to our attention, and it&#8217;s all so beautifully and dispassionately illustrated through a photojournalist&#8217;s lens. The camera never lies &#8211; any photographer will tell you that. Now, I don&#8217;t work for the Post (At least not yet! I&#8217;m avaaaailable!), but I wanted to help too, so I ventured out today to see if I could shine the harsh light of unpaid photojournalism on any other wasted resources on our streets.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m sorry to say, it&#8217;s much worse than we thought:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1179\" style=\"width: 466px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gudphoto.com\/bikenyc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/empty-car-lanes.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1179\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1179\" title=\"empty-car-lanes\" src=\"http:\/\/gudphoto.com\/bikenyc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/empty-car-lanes.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"456\" height=\"686\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gudphoto.com\/bikenyc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/empty-car-lanes.jpg 760w, https:\/\/gudphoto.com\/bikenyc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/empty-car-lanes-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/gudphoto.com\/bikenyc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/empty-car-lanes-680x1024.jpg 680w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 456px) 100vw, 456px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1179\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Where is everybody? And do we really need this street?<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It was as if I&#8217;d come to in some sort of nightmarish, &#8220;I am Legend&#8221;-like post-apocalyptic scenario.
