  • Welcome to the #BikeNYC blog!

Brooklyn photographer Dmitry Gudkov's #BikeNYC project is an ongoing series of portraits and profiles of New Yorkers who use a bicycle to get around. Taken together, these images and stories begin to form a portrait of New York as an emerging cycling city.

Bike Portrait: Jesse the Art Dealer

At any given time, Jesse shares his 1-bedroom Williamsburg apartment with 4-5 bikes in various stages of assembly. And for a week or two each spring, his stretch of Havermeyer St looks like this.

His girlfriend Emmy contacted me almost a year ago about doing a portrait of Jesse with “one of his other girlfriends” for his birthday. We couldn’t make our schedules work then. But 2012 is a new year, and Wednesday evening we finally made it happen. Jesse agonized a bit before choosing this lovely Ciöcc for the portrait.

Spring has sprung!

Bike Portrait: Susan Lindell of Recycle-A-Bicycle

bike portrait susan lindell recycle a bicycle

Susan Lindell is a manager at Recycle-A-Bicycle in DUMBO and the newest contributor to the cycling blog Velojoy. She joins the already impressive team of Susi Wunsch, Kim Burgas, and Genevieve Walker. I shot some bike portraits of Susan for the Velojoy “About” page. From that page:

Susan (contributor) loves her job as manager of Recycle-A-Bicycle in Brooklyn, where she has been getting her hands dirty for seven years. She also volunteers as the instructor of Time’s Up! Women’s and Trans bicycle repair classes. Susan has been an avid city cyclist since someone gave her a too-big bicycle eight years ago — its frequent break-downs set Susan on the road to becoming a mechanic. Her current ride is a Surly Cross-Check; she also owns a classic Trek road bike and a newly built single-speed mountain bike for bouncing around on the potholed city streets.

And here’s a pretty great video featuring Susan:

Ben from Bedstuy - I love the bikenyc portraits, and this video with the lady from Recycle a Bicycle was awesome!

Tumblr

Tumblr. What’s it for? Revolutionary blogging platform or the fastest way to image theft? I don’t really know. But it’s there, and people use it. And yesterday someone on Twitter asked if I would post my #BikeNYC photos to a Tumblr feed so she could follow me. I’ll just assume that for every person who actually asks me, there are thousands who yearn for this and just don’t have time to ask. This is surely the case. I’ve actually had a Tumblr account for this project for awhile, but haven’t updated it much because, as you have guessed, I don’t quite know how I’m supposed to use it.

But no longer! I’m fully (re)embracing this platform that all the kids are using! So, check out all the #BikeNYC goodness on tumblr, at an easy to remember url: BikeNYC.tumblr.com. Head over there, comment, repost, reblog, steal, and do whatever else you do on Tumblr. Thanks!

New York Bike Portrait: Jesse the Lawyer

Jesse is a first-year attorney at Ropes & Gray and, as far as he knows, the only bike commuter at the firm. He rides his old Panasonic road bike from the Upper East Side to Midtown in his work clothes. “I usually just ride in my suit – especially in the winter because I don’t sweat.”

Jesse enjoyed commuting by bike all through college and law school, so it seemed natural to keep doing it after landing his first law job. He’s not sure if he’ll keep doing it this way once the NYC weather gets sticky, but so far the mild winter has been perfect.

He has a couple of good reasons to pick cycling over the MTA — speed and experiencing the city among them — but I found this to be the most compelling: ”Riding a bike is fun.”

Portrait was taken here.
